But Is It Horror? A Critical Re-examination of Genre in Cormac McCarthy’s The Road

Nicholas Kaufmann is the critically acclaimed author of General Slocum's Gold (Burning Effigy Press) and the collection Walk in Shadows (Prime Books, out of print). His fiction has appeared in Cemetery Dance, The Mammoth Book of Best New Erotica 3, City Slab, The Best American Erotica 2007, Playboy, X: The Erotic Treasury and others. In addition to writing the monthly "State of the Genre" column for FearZone, his non-fiction has appeared in On Writing Horror (Writers Digest Books), Annabelle Magazine, Fantastic Metropolis, Hellnotes and others. He has also served on the Board of Trustees for the Horror Writers Association.

Professionally immersed in books his whole life, he's been the Publicity Manager for a small literary press, a pitchman for a widely respected PR firm specializing in TV and radio author appearances, a bookstore clerk, an independent bookstore owner, and a manager for Barnes & Noble, as well as the manager for a small indie video store. When not planted in front of the glowing small screen petting her cats and watching horror films (or simply horrifically bad shows on SyFy), she can be found planted in front of the glowing big screen at her local theatre watching horror films, or in her room reading horror novels, or searching under the bed and in the closets for monsters. Non-horror-related activities she enjoys include seeing live bands (because the dead ones don’t play so well) and dancing.
